First time having an SBR/SBS engraved? Here are some tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years.
I’m going to put my NFA weapons in a trust. Any suggestions?
If you are creating a trust, give it a short name. It’s much easier to engrave NPJ TRUST rather than NATHAN PAUL JOHNSTON REVOCABLE NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT TRUST. And yes, we’ve seen them this long before.
What information do I have to have engraved on the lower?
Your name or trust name, and the city and state in which you live. Essentially, stick to what you put in Box 3b of your Form 1*.
Do I have to have the caliber engraved on the lower as part of the NFA text?
The caliber you put in Box 4c of your Form 1*, must be visible somewhere on your fully assembled SBR. So, if your lower says MULTI, then you need to have the caliber on your barrel. If it’s not on the barrel, you should probably go ahead and add it to the lower.
I’m sending you an 80% lower. What information needs to be engraved on it?
Pretty much all of the info that’s been addressed so far (name/trust name, city, state, and caliber) plus a little more. In addition to all of that, you’ll need the model (Box 4d) and serial number (Box 4g) that you put on your Form 1*.
Does my lower need to be refinished after the engraving?
Assuming its aluminum, no. You can have it refinished before or after since aluminum doesn’t rust. If you’re looking for a very subtle tone-on-tone look, then go with the refinishing afterwards. If you’re looking for the engraving to stand out, then we would recommend having it refinished before the engraving. NOTE: if you are planning to have it refinished (cerakoted, parkerized, etc) after the engraving, make sure the engraving will withstand bead blasting and recoating.
I have a Dremel tool …
OK, let me stop you there! Keep your Dremel in your pants.
You are welcome to give it a shot. It may come out just fine for what you need. However, we see a lot of “dremelling gone bad” engravings here. First, while we have some tricks up our sleeves that we have developed over time, sometimes, we just can’t always fix it. Second, if we can fix it, it will cost more for the fixing... and, it just doesn’t look as nice as having it done right the first time.
*The Form 1 referenced here refers to OMB No. 1140-0011 (06/30/2019, ATF E-Form 1 (5320.1) Revised August 2017).
